There’s beefcakes, and there’s juicy burgers, and while I’m a huge fan of both, they don’t usually go hand in hand. During a recent press trip to promote his new movie Deepwater Horizon burger baron/beefcake extraordinaire Mark Wahlberg offered the opportunity to gaze on both, with big brother Paul mingling with Toronto media (including yours truly) extolling the ins and outs of their famous franchise and family business. The newest season of the saga is airing on A&E so I sat down with Paul to get the goods on what his favourite burger is (Our Burger), why they chose Toronto as a location for their burger bar and what their fave burgers are from their gourmet menu.
On why they chose Toronto…
“Toronto was a natural location for us. For Mark and Donnie, they film up here all the time. We have so many connections here in the city including one of our investors Henry Wu is from Toronto. It feels like home. The people here are so friendly. It’s funny because even when I’m far away, I was in London and someone was like I love the show, I ask where they’re from and they’re like Saskatchewan!! We love Canada.”
On their fave burger toppings…
Mark’s top pick is the Thanksgiving Day burger, fresh ground turkey stuffing, butternut squash and orange/cranberry sauce. Donnie digs the BBQ Bacon Burger, he spends a lot of time in California, likes spicy things and loves bacon. I opt for the Our Burger, and sometimes when I’m starving grab stuff from the kitchen and make my own creation.”
My fave pick? The Surf n’ Turf. A fresh ground patty with white cheddar, steamed lobster and a garlic aioli. This burger is a special feature burger, so hopefully it’ll reappear next year too! The current feature sounds pretty drool worthy too- aplty named ‘Tis the Season Burger boasts an 8oz patty, smoked cheddar and applewood smoked bacon! With no firm plans for Canadian domination (yet) Toronto has two Wahlburger locations, downtown on Blue Jays Way, and at Pearson Airport, but hopefully more are on the way!
Tune in to see yours truly Wednesday, November 23rd at 10pm on A&E! XO Libby
