There’s been a revival around St. Lawrence Market, and I’m not talking just the north market. Burgeoning with new condo developments, restaurants and nightlife, Old Town has become a bit of a hot spot, and with Scullhouse Rowing now open for business, the temps are sure to rise!
Owned by Kristin Jeffery, a former member of Canada’s National Rowing Team, means that this class isn’t your basic ‘House of Cards’ style workout. No, it’s intense and anchored with Kristin’s knowledge and experience of being a professional athlete. Heavy breathing aside, I loved the class instantly, it wasn’t just mindless calorie burning, it was technique steeped with tradition, echoed by Kristin’s encouragement and devotion to the sport.

Kristin also leads some of the classes, anchored by the choruses of ‘yip’ (or at least that’s what it sounds like). Guided through a warm up and then lead through a rapid row session, classes clock in at 55 minutes and also include some mat work, like push ups and core work, perfect complements to intense bursts of cardio.

This double duty workout engages over 85% of your muscles which translates to burning up to 800 calories a class! Scullhouse also has a tidy gym just adjacent to the rowing studio with more gym-type equipment and free weights. Classes run for either 45 or 55 minutes, or the row & flow class which adds a little yoga and meditation to your routine. Classes run several times a day and on weekends and will set you back $26 a pop. Our workout left me energized for the day, and definitely sore the day after.
