I’ve been lucky enough to run with the local Nike group for about a year now, and events like these ones leave me absolutely ravenous for the next one. Meeting up at SkyDome (k, fine Rogers Centre) the Nike Running Club took over the turf and ran on the field before heading out on a swift 5K run. Nike always leaves you in suspense, the only detail mentioned was the meeting time and place. I love the energy and element of surprise, and of course, this one had the crew salivating.
Here’s a little secret, anyone can join these classes. Sign up here, and sign up often, and sign up early.
After pulling a Pillar in the outfield, we ran over to the old Jay’s stomping grounds, Exhibition Stadium. Gathering around the old home plate (which I didn’t realize they immortalized in a parking lot) we were met by none other than Pat Tabler! Pat regaled us on being an Ex-Blue Jay, and while I outted myself as actually remembering him (and therefore dating myself by a full decade) he certainly whipped the crowd up even further, prepping us for the final few K’s that were waiting for us after this final pit stop.
The last surprise was my favourite. After playing baseball the last two years I was already missing out on the team atmosphere (even though my season only ended 3 weeks ago). Nike amped things up even further, setting up baseball diamonds at Trinity-Bellwoods for some baseball related antics. Fastest pitch, check. Running bases, you got it! But all cred has to go to the MVP, The Ace, who graced us with his presence.
All of us sporting Go Deep Go Jays shirts just clinched the team atmosphere! If you haven’t joined the crew yet, fear not, this squad runs right through winter. While most of us are prepping for the upcoming Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon, others are total newbies to the sport and all are welcomed with a warm and open arms!
