DishcrawlTO hosted their popular version of food related get-togethers last week, this time, taking over Queen West around Trinity-Bellwoods park. With 40-odd people in attendance, the taco stranglehold on the Toronto dining scene seems just as popular as ever.
Guests met up at Squirly’s first, then we divided into groups for the two first taco stands. Our group popped our collective cherries at Feel Good Guru for a vegan taco. Dubbed the Eco Taco, and a regular feature on their menu, the handheld little lettuce wrap barely contained the myriad of ingredients; spicy nut ‘meat’, grated carrots, slivered beets, chunks of red peppers with guac, pico de gallo and a housemade avolopeno sauce. I was pleasantly surprised how filling these tiny bundles were, after one I was already fearing the onslaught of actual meat related tacos.
Routed back to Squirly’s, we were greeted with a special chorizo taco that was thrown together just for us dishcrawl-ers. With diced tomatoes, shaved lettuce, parsley and an kick of lime cilantro the pork was crumbly and had a sweet heat. Nice!
The winner of the taco takedown was up next. Mavrik unsurprisingly features tacos on their menu regularly, which cinched the win with their duo of amazing tacos. First up the chicken taco with a spicy ginger kick, plum salsa and chipotle aioli. Scrumptious! The next taco up was the chickpea which balanced tandoori style spices with a stunning dose of Sriracha mixed into an aioli. Queso Fresco added a creamy texture and the diced red onion upped the spicy factor.
Springing next door, we snuck upstairs to the 3rd floor at Czehoski and noshed our last nibbles, the creative and supremely rich beef tongue and oxtail taco. Topped with fresh radish, homemade pickle and braised cabbage the marrying of meats were succulent and surprisingly juicy. Lovely!
Special shout out to Tracy Wong for the special lighting! You rock Tracy! Thanks for having me Winnie and the Dishcrawl team. I look forward to many more sunny fun summer events!!
