The newest neighbour on Linbrook Road might just be you if you play your cards right. Princess Margaret just welcomed a small group of looky-loos to their showstopping Oakville showhome to give us an up close and personal tour of their latest prize, a stunning 6,587 sq ft house situated on a picturesque lot.
The devil is in the details, and having been invited into viewing some of Princess Margaret’s most recent homes, this one is my fave so far. The style of the home, the red brick exterior and massive windows are timeless features, but what struck me the most was totally irreplaceable, it’s the greenest prize home I’ve ever seen, in fact, designer Brian Gluckstein went to great lengths to ensure that all these giant mature trees would remain part of the landscape.
The greenery continues inside, the kitchen, with it’s massive focal wall window is hedged by another clever detail, a boxed garden inside for growing all your favourite herbs.
I was totally fooled by the front foyer, what I thought was a chic wallpaper turned out to be a master paint job, with textured lines that mimic the best rolls.
The step down to the living room is another feature I adored. There’s something so cozy about a sunken living room, it automatically makes you feel right at home, and focused on the family and friends surrounding you. I LOVED the mirrored coffee table, and the subtle palate Brian carefully curated through the space. Soft, but punchy. The mural on the focal wall is another bold pop, and another fool job, it’s wallpaper too!
The girls room is totally adorable. Steering clear of traditional pinks, the soft blue is a lovely pop of colour, and the vaulted ceilings are a cute architectural feature. A Lucite chair is both functional and airy, a great room for girls to grow up in.
Brian is known for unconventional creations and that’s exactly what he showcases in the master bedroom. Nary a closet in sight, instead, the headboard acts as a divider/closet. The back wall is floor to ceiling organization, drawers, cupboards, the works. The back of the headboard is more closet space, so choosing a his and hers would prove to be an exercise in the boundaries of marriage, or the fine art of calling dibs!
Just off the master bedroom is the luxurious ensuite bathroom with one of coolest additions- a sink inside the shower strictly for shaving. Love this idea. As someone who has cleaned up a small forest of ginger stubble from my hubby’s beard, I can attest to the usefulness of this sink!
Heading to the basement, you’re greeted by a an entire putting green- a room for golf lovers. You know how the saying goes- drive for show, putt for dough! Adjacent you’ll find the media room, with a step built right in for that true theater experience. Chaise lounges with faux fur blankets beckon you for a Star Wars marathon, or maybe just Lawrence of Arabia once.
Since I’m pretty much moving in at this point, it seemed timely that I suss out where to put the annual Christmas tree, and although it’s decorated like a home office, shoving the desk to one side would afford visitors a gasp worthy festive focal point, with the tree half a floor up, visible from both the top and main floors of the house. And well the colour, I mean, it just flows, you know?!
Completing our self guided gawk fest, we were greeted by mixologist (k, fine, bartender) Connor Brown, who walked us through his fave cocktail at Her Majesty’s Pleasure. An Old Fashioned turns out to be anything but when artfully blended with bitters and fresh orange zest. A perfect companion drink to toast this classic and stylish house.
Recipe courtesy Ger Cullen
In a chilled Old Fashioned glass, use one sugar cube and dilute with a drop of simple syrup and 4-5 dashes of Angostura bitters. Use 3-4 generous amounts of orange zest. Muddle together until liquid and add 1 oz of bourbon and ice. Stir for about 10-15 revolutions and then top with ice and add the other 1 oz of Bourbon. Stir again. Garnish with orange peel rimmed in glass. You can also use a maraschino cherry but make sure they are the real ones!
Already at 50% sold out, you really ought to snag your tickets now…or maybe not since you’re my direct competition at this point! Either way, Princess Margaret is a champion for cancer treatment so everyone wins regardless…but of course, there is one lucky ticket that will be booking a moving truck!
